North Carolina State Record Catfish was caught on a Barbie rod this year. I'm sure it will be a good learning rod.

Chris & Jack,
Albright has a decent reputation as a fly rod manufacturer. You can buy directly from Albright and they are selling these at 50% off right now. You can get a combo for about 80.00 bucks or so.
For an all around rod I would stick with the 8' or 9' in the 5/6 weight. 2 piece or 4 piece is really your choice, you won't notice any difference in action with either one.
Many guys swear by 9 footers because the longer length let's them mend the line better and get a decent drift.

After saving all that money I would shoot David an email at Rivers Edge and put the money you saved towards a fly fishing lesson.

deed is done

god i hate spending money......but deed is done...........eepppp!

white river dogwood canyon pre-assembled fly outfit (dc907rod dcII reel, preloaded with backing, flyline and leader)9foot 6wt

pair of detts frugal frog flies

20 piece trout starter kit fly box

20 piece caddis life cycle fly box

............I'll pick up tippet locally, and maybe some mayfly/stonefly/migdes

eventually i want to get another reel for sinking flyline, but i got to get started first....

lol god, now i need to learn how to cast and learn all the knots and tech's.....

good golly do i ever get myself into trouble =p

any advice from you guys on what to do and get and how to do thing would be awesome.....also, i can't seem to find a NH hatch chart, which would be great......

i am going to renew my fishing lisence this friday with jack so thats outta the way

cleaned out my spinning tackle tonight, so other then learning how to cast and were, all i have to do is clean my car out, lmao........

figure, month or 2 practicing casting in my backyard in the snow should be enough for the water

plan i suppose is once ice breaks, wilt hit this weed pond with the wooly buggers and the frog flys for bass/panfish for some pratice, maybe hit some merrimack for bass/trout practice, i spoted 2 places i might go on the sohegan for trout, not to familar over there so advice would be great, then once we are full going in spring, massibesic.....

its rough cause i have never fly fished or fished trout, and my exp is with bass/panfish/pickerel, and trout fishing starts in cold weather and the others are warm weather, so i may miss trout this spring due to inexperience, but fall will be fairer game..........

again guys, advice advice advice, i know you guys are great for it, though i noticed the winter has slowed down forum activity

thanks guys

I have no advice, but congrats. I got a fly rod last year at the end of the season and started using it. my only advice is, with weighted sinking flies, make sure your line arcs not cracks the whip! those flies sure do fly that way.

I think when your buying a fly rod you should consider where your going to use and what are you trying to catch.

I have been fishing New Hampshire streams and river for many years, My favorite rod that I use most of the time is a 7' 3 wt made by G Loomis, if you were to hold this rod you would think it would brake in half with the first fish on.

Most of our fishing area are in tight spots, we have a lot of trees and growth near the river edges and it is very hard to cast from the banks, a small rod helps in this case, even if you wade out to the middle and get some
casting room the short rod works well.

As for you first fly rod you could start out with all most any brand and it will catch fish. I enjoy using light tackle and I think you will end up doing the same. Your 9 footers and larger rods are great if you have the room or if your casting off a boat.

Keep your eyes open on Ebay or Craigslist and you will find some nice rods for less money. Same goes for fly reels, you can find them all over the inter-net for a good price, make sure your reel is what the rod is calling for and try to get one that you can interchange the spools.
Chris, If you get into it let me know, I have a bunch of my favorite fly's and I will make you up a nice selection free of charge.

Goodluck Ron

I bought a "starter" rod from sports Authority about 3 years ago. it's still my only fly rod.

It's a 8'6" rod, of medium action, with 5-6 weight line. The reel crapped out last season, literally fell apart with a fish on. I have replaced it with an entry level Ross reel, which seems to be funtioning fine.
For flies, I have been buying one or six at a time from local shops...local to the areas I fish. They seem to lead you in the right direction as to what hatches are active for the area.
I am by no means a 'good' caster, hell, I'm a hack,

But I can get the fly to land where I choose, so right or wrong technique, it's working.
Best fishing so far was on the Battenkill in Vt., but have had pretty good sucess on the Baker river in Rumney by the covered bridge, and as of late, on the ponds of Madison.

I always bring a small ultralight spinning gear rig with me too, in case I just get frusterated with the fly casting.

Fly fishing is the most daunting thing to get started into. I plunged into it when I was younger, and taught myself... the main thing to do is not get discouraged! There's a lot to learn. Don't be afraid to experiment. And don't pay any attention to the snooty, uptight stereotype of trout fly fisherman. Although those people exist (trust me, I got yelled at when I was 14 by a 50 year old guy when I was fishing 300 feet downstream from him...) I'm a pretty unorthodox fly fisherman, I do what works for me, and I catch fish.

So practice those casts, you'll get it down soon enough. Best of luck to ya.
