North Carolina State Record Catfish was caught on a Barbie rod this year. I'm sure it will be a good learning rod.

Chris & Jack,
Albright has a decent reputation as a fly rod manufacturer. You can buy directly from Albright and they are selling these at 50% off right now. You can get a combo for about 80.00 bucks or so.
For an all around rod I would stick with the 8' or 9' in the 5/6 weight. 2 piece or 4 piece is really your choice, you won't notice any difference in action with either one.
Many guys swear by 9 footers because the longer length let's them mend the line better and get a decent drift.

After saving all that money I would shoot David an email at Rivers Edge and put the money you saved towards a fly fishing lesson.
