Any other thoughts for a get together to let us newbees take some notes and be better fishermen for next year?

Question:

What weight line should I have on my spinning real?

line

Mono. I've got 40lb on there now. Takes up too much room on the spool. Surfcasting.

I would be interested in a get together. As far as line goes, i know some are using braided on their spinning gear now. No stretch, so sometimes that is a deciding factor. Test would depend on targeted species and conditions.

60# Braid (you can often get your jig back with the 60 as opposed to the 40) for the cod.....250' you can feel a crab touch it! 20# braid for the Striper, you can go higer if you are targeting larger fish, but they tire quickly anyway........Or you can use 8# Wally world mono, reserved for flounder, seems to hook up more striper than flounder.

i don't use shock leaders fishing around rocky structure you will break off more fish/plugs at the shock leader. My group that I fish with is 50:50. Half use shock leaders half dont'.

The only reason the guys use them is handle the leader (easier on the hands) when landing a big fish. Coincidently these guys don't use some of the big dollar plugs that the guys who don't use shock leaders use.

Hopefully that will help you make an informed decision.
