I didn't catch a fish for the first hour, so I caught 500 myself in five hours. Captain Forrest is coming with us Sunday and he thinks he can out-fish me. Poor misguided fellow; gotta love an optimist!
No gill net required; small jigs, spring bobbers and pre-cut your bait. Then just move like a ninja! |

OK here's the deal. Anybody who wants to catch more smelt come see me. I'll tell you how to make your rigs fish better or if you buy a jig pole here I'll set it up the way my own are. This can be hazardous to your health, as if you are outfishing your buddy three to one he's liable to pee in your thermos when your back is turned!

I am set in my ways and almost always stay deep. If I have enough room I set a scout line 4-6 feet down, and if it fishes as good or better than my deep lines I can bring them up. When there are a ton of fish in you are more likely to find some shallow, and obviously it takes less time to land fish and reset lines if you don't have to go to the bottom. I have used a "sneak" line as shown to me by an old timer when the current isn't too bad; he used to tap a nail into his race hole and tie a length of nylon line with a light mono leader to it with a cork float, and tie a #8 hook to the end. This would get the fish that creep along under the ice picking algae and keep things interesting until the main schools came through. Worked well on the Bay but tough on the rivers where you are liable to snag your neighbor's line. I think where you are fishing deep will work most days but try a short line for insurance if you can.
By the way, this is an old thread from last year and I'm not carrying blood worms any more. You can get them from Suds and Soda; some like them but my customer base DIDN'T! Last edited by 47onthewall : 01-28-2010 at 05:32 PM. |

I think one of those underwater video cameras would be both frustrating and educational; educational to see where and how they move; frustrating as to how many thousands swim by without any thought of feeding on your bait!
