First Report from the OBX

Well with no job offers and the need to find something to keep me busy I bought a kayak. It was used by one of the rental companies in the area. The sound is 40 yds fro my front door. So I set out on my maiden voyage this afternoon while Amanda made some dinner. I paddled north against the current and into the wind to test myself, my boat, and start a drift. First cast in the new boat yeilds my first puppy drum. Tow casts later I caught my first NC spot (sea trout). Both fish swam away happy. I missed several other fish and spooked some nice size drum on my way back in. Next time I'm taking the girls camera. Al capped off with an awesome sunset.

It kicks arse down here!

We are in Kill Devil Hills which is in between Kitty Hawk and Nags Head. The Wright Brothers made their first flight like a half a mile from my house. If you've never been here before then make it a vacation destination. There is always something to do. You could google 2029 Edenton St Kill Devil Hills NC and then get a satellite image of my house and the area.

My long term goal is to get a year or two under my belt and then start a guide business base around Kayak fishing and surf fishing. In the mean time I am trying to start my own Auto CAD company. Making a living on the beach isn't easy and this economy makes it even harder. But I am not leaving.

Go with the guided trips now. The rich just get richer and they will pay silly money to have you tell them where to catch fish. Tell some funny stories and some trival history tidbids, tell them where to eat at night and your business will thrive, Oh, and don't forget to tell them where the strippers (yes intended this time) are and you will have a sweet business.

Oddfish,

Glad to hear first cast was a fish, wicked good Karma

Yeah I hear ya. I just need to confirm that my catching wasn't a fluke and I knew what i was doing.

And I have no idea why my karma was so good last night. Maybe that boat is blessed.

thats one section i haven't made it too... i have run the pamlico sounds many times but i either cut in or out at oregon inlet or i run the ditch up from portsmouth to the sounds (thus by passing your section)

odd fish certainly has the best recomendation on the guide service!!!!

best of luck to you..... i am not making the trip south this year, otherwise i would give you a call as we stopped (if it was at oregon or somewhere close)

I spoke with one of the rental out door companies today for a kayak guide position just to get my feet wet and make sure I'm good at it. If it work doesn't work out/they don't pay well I will go at it on my own.

I like to be held accountable and responsible for my actions hence why I use my name on these forums. If I have an unsuccessful guide business because I can't put people on fish than I may find myself in trouble.

I think I have decent enough people skills and I love to teach fishing. However there is a voice inside of me that says I don't have the local credentials. Then my loving girlfriend who always knows what to say, says some thing "Harry, when will you have the confidence to know you are an excellent fisherman". Since she is the only bread winner in the house I have to assume she is being genuine.
