I made this post to you when you were brand new last year. I'm glad the bridge idea worked for you....It was probably the most valuable fresh water info I could have given out....Nice Largemouth!
BTW, what did Jack think of it? Did he see it fight? I hope it helps him to catch the fishing fever. Over many years of freshwater fishing for bass, My best advice to someone new to fishing who was limited to fishing from shore, would be to look for culverts/bridges..Even from my Bass boat I would often be fishing these spots. 1) culverts and bridges often provide cover in the form of riprap, the small fist size to basketball size boulders that are often used around the abudtments to prevent erosion, and to build a solid base for the bridge. These boulders provide great cover for bait fish, and are the perfect habitat for crayfish, which are probably one of the most prefered foods for Bass. Of course crayfish type immitations, and crankbaits are often the best lures in this situation. Try spider jigs, jig&pig and tube baits. 2) The second reason I think culverts are a great place to look is because of a Basses sensitivity to light...Although many bass are caught durring the daylight hours, Bass prefer to feed at night and are predominatly nocturnal. From my experience there is no time that is more obviouse than during the heat of summer. The darkness afforded by a culvert or low bridge is the next best thing to being out fishing at midnight. Also the water is significantly cooler under a culvert, something bass also favor during the heat of summer. In addition, if you watch most nature shows with a preditor/ prey relationship,Lions, etc. the preditor is often lying in wait under the cover of darkness, waiting to attack its prey which is out in the light.. 3) In addition to the above reasons, a culvert or bridge often by its nature has a current flowing beneeth it. Bass, especialy the bigger ones would much rather have a food delivery then going out shopping. A large fish expends alot of energy when it is chasing its food, but if a current brings food right past her nose, little energy is needed to feed. Keep in mind though that the bass will often be just outside of the current flow or behind a rock or current obstruction so that it doesn't have to fight the flow of the water. If you remember that generaly during the summer months big bass are lazy.slow lure presentation is often key. Do not hesitate to let your lure drift through the culvert. Often a floating rapala, a bomber long a, or other floating surface lure that is allowed to slowly drift under the culvert and is twitched gently will produce some large fish. 4) One last reason I would recomend culverts (especialy in more shallow southern N.H lakes) is because the water is generaly deeper near them. Bass are often thought of as a shallow water fish, but when the water heats up in the summer they will often go deeper..Many spots that are accesible from shore have a gently sloping bank that is more condusive to sunfish and crappie which are not as sensitive to the warm water temps. Often the bass are not far away, along the drop offs, but often out of reach of the shore fisherman. By fishing near a bridge you often have a variety of depth within casting distance. 5) Don't forget this info in the spring either. Bass often relate to the current flow here because of migrating fish such as perch which will often go up stream to spawn..Also many times the reverse is true in the spring...Back water areas heat up quicker than the main lake, and the warmer water dumping into the lake acts like a magnet for mama Bass. I hope these things help you and Jack in your quest for other species, but I hope you can always find the joy in the kibey, sunfish, pumkinseed or crappie..They all have beautifull colorings, are abundent, and are where many of us started our journey into this fishing hobbie. yeah it made for a good story.....
i tend to use light line and small hooks, so once i got him up to surface, cause he was easy fighting deep, i knew landing was going to be very hard without line breaking or it shaking the hook..... when i did work it as close as possible (btw jack and i left our 2 nets in the jeep across the road), the line broke, so i dived on the bugger in the rocks, got my 2 hands on him as fast as i could and managed to get him out of the water, damn lucky with my 500dollar phone on me, didn't really get all that wet either.... jacks pissed though, all that kid wants to do is get a "keeper" and go home and cook it i told him it was a keeper, but you know what, more big ones i put back, the more big ones i get to catch!!!!!!! other then being out of the water for about a minute, he was returned to water completely unharmed and in good condition.... to be honest, since line snapped, assuming at knot, i have no idea where he was hooked, assume it was deep in the mouth since i didn't see it on his lip anywhere, and the worm is also completely missing... glad i used one of the cheap hooks, will rust out of where ever it is pretty quick |
