I know it's slightly off topic, but

Is anyone a boat mechanic that does side jobs out here?

My boat still won't start and my daughter is coming for the weekend and really looking forward to going out on the boat.
I rarley get to see her and would really hate to dissapoint her.
She wants to go fishing and I'm praying she is my good luck charm.

I need someone who really knows what they are doing with outboards and can figure this thing out.

Anyone?

I'm not a certified mechanic or anything like that but if you give me the details of the death I'll give you my opinion for free (may still not be a bargin, but you won't lose money on it.). Need to know how it died and what it's doing now, along with the size and type, electric start or pull etc.

Thanks.

1989 Evinrude 40hp Model# E40ECU, electric start.

About 5 weeks ago went out in front of P.I., shut it down, fishing for about 45 min. and wouldn't start back up. Was turning over normally, just not kicking in to fire up. Got towed in.
Got it home, checked some things, no spark. Couldn't figure out why.
Brought it to Dover Marine, he looked at it, called me said all set it was a ground wire in the control box.
Only wires in the control box is the ignition wires. (Lanyard is bypassed)
Started right up and ran fine 2 more trips.

Last thursday, went out on Piscat. was fine for a few hours, ran out front for Macks. drifted for 20-30 minutes.
Wouldn't start back up again. Marine Patrol needed me out of the way of that big tanker coming in and towed me to the Coast Guard station.

I checked all wires, couldn't get one screw out of the back of the control box
waited about 20 minutes, turned it over and she finally fired up.

Got back near the GSB and shut it off, started right back up.
Took it out, got home, wouldn't fire up again, tried next day, no luck.

I've been through the forums, iboats forums and ALOT of people have the same problems, but, NOONE ends up posting the solution to the problem.

One guy said when he adjusted the mixture to make it a little less lean, it started every time. How do you adjust that? I can't find it in my manual.

I've tightened every ground screw I can find. I moved the ignition out of the control box since finding some of the wires to it were pinched in the box.

Just sux, missing alot of fishing.

Much appreciated Marc.
I'll try to call him first.
I found on CL there are some boat mechanics that make house calls, free estimates and $50 hr for repairs.
I'm gonna try to get an estimate on it and go from there.

Thanks.

I don't have much advice, but I would not adjust the fuel just yet. If it is a spark problem there is no need to create another problem. Have you tested the coils? This may not be the problem since the engine doesn't intermitenly cut out or die while driving, but it is some thing to look at. I assume you have new sparrk plugs and have checked for fireing on each plug? If it were me I would go right down the electrical line (which it seems you have been doing) Don't over look the battery terminal and (if you have one) the main power switch, those are both killers and frequently go unnoticed. My truck has a bad habit of dieing like that and it is the battery terminal that looks fine, but scrape it down reattach and the thing works great for another 6 months. I have found Dover Marine to be quite helpful, so I suspect they found the initial problem, they may just have misspoke about the location or the fact that it was maybe not a ground wire that was loose. Sorry I can't be of more help.

no spark issue

You may want to check your points and negative grounds. My points were ground down to almost nothing, and would run ok at times, but not even start others. Drove me nuts! Couldnt troll all of May or June Was grounding out on the cam, therefore no spark intermittently. Good Luck.

I have a guy looking at it tonight, he will be getting back to me in the next couple hours. He's been a boat mechanic for 15 yrs., If he can't figure it out I might as well junk it! LOL
I'll post what his diagnoses is after he calls me later.

Thanks again

Roc,
The guy looking at it so far has tested a couple things, he says the stator is giving some high resistance readings, like the book says 0.27 +- 0.05 and one of the leads is reading 0.80
You think this could maybe be a suspect in the problem?
Does it makes sense for this to cause the problems I have?

He just came and got my manuals for that motor and is going to call me in the morning with his further diagnoses.
