Thumbs up A good Day in the Hamptons

Still living up to my name, but at least today the species list was of cool things. Usually when I fish, for some reason unknown to me I catch on average 5 species, And I often don't catch what I'm after. Today was different.

Species list Striper, Bluefish, Flounda, Dog Fish, and a Bonus Species, Crevalle Jack (Who Knew) Oh and one bug. My main goal today was to get my shallow water traps move befor the Hanna Montana, Ike Show passed through.

I'm Going to post two now so that I can put in pretty pictures.

Picts of the day

So the morning was slow but the goal was to get the traps to safety. When I got in I noticed that pesky poggie school that has been giving me grief. This time I had an ubber small sabikki rig ready and put on a small amount of herring. Finally got one. As, I'm throwing it in the bucket I think to myself it doesn't look right, so I take a closer look. Of all things this pesky school is a micro snapper school. I caught one more before I had to leave. Came back in the afternood with Striper on the agenda. No keepers but a 27 that jacked my reel See photo, and yes I landed that fish on that mess and untangleed it later w/o cutting. For fun I thew out the mico sabikki right at slak tide, and sure enough the first legal Black back shows up. I then went back to my super secret docking space and proceeded to limit out on Blues (oh yeah check out the photo, total weight had to go for at least 200 Grams).
But as I'm throwing one of the bigger ones in My brain interjects again (I hate it when it does that life is some much more fun not thinking)I look down and it's not a bluefish. Then the damn thing spined me with it's caudal fins or area near there. So I thinks to my self "Hommie this must be some kind of jack or mackeral, and it's not a mackeral." Turns out that it's a baby Crevalle, got three more after that and then headed home to, get BF by Hampton beach Traffic on chille days or what ever the thing is this weekend.

Anyway, good day overall and the blues and crevalle are being pickled as we speak. Pictures are not loading againBangHea d.gif! Im going to go inside my computer now and punch it from the inside!

Ok For picts go to next post sorry for the inconvience

Riverjim glad to hear your words,

Yea, I thought the same thing, but apperenlty they come all the way up to nova scotia spawn and then the little monkies come into the estuary for the summer months. But they are predominatly a lower lattitude fish, below the Cape I believe. Show what I know though, I would have bet money that that school was a Clupeid of sme kind, but noooooo a mixed school with two non clup species WTF, and yes I am a certitfed ( or certifyable) marine biologist. Heck at this rate I can get a Govment job on acessing fisheries.

Jack Crevelle? They kinda look like big butter fish to me. I've caught jacks in Florida and they didn't look like that maybe the juvies look different. I would have to say butter fish tho.

Let me see if I can do this........................ Picture one Crevalle from a museum sample, Pict two A butterfish from another book. They are remarkably similar but note the lateral line diferences, the anal fin diferences and the dorsal fin. The Tail is also a bit more narrow in the Crevalle.

Also the smallies do look a lot different than the big ones, and the butter fis don't have those anal appendages that stab right through your fingers.

Hmmmm I dunno. I need more convincing. Still look like butterfish. But your the scientist and i just some fishing nerd. I'm not trying to be a jerk either I just don't see it. I will poke around a little more on-line but not till after I go do some scouting.

PS Avoid Hampton they have their seafood fest today or something.

I was somewhere within 50 miles of Hampton myself on Friday and not so much as a strike the whole day. Glad to see someone on the water got a fish or two.
