Headed out to the shore front last night but on my way out got a call from my buddy who was in the back channel. Said it was insane and that they caught a few. So i promptly left the Hampton area and headed to see the insanity. When I arrived I saw bait everywhere, endlessly moving and constantly erupting with bass chasing. Small fish 16"-22". They were feeding on what I thought was baby alewives. Small baits were they key. THe fish were pretty finicky, I expected one after another but it was a little more work than that. Around 3:00 am the bite slowed and I went home wishing I had just stayed out on the shore front.

I don't know if they still make it, but there used to be a finesse slugo, in alewife patern, I think they were two inches long, but had a very slim profile...Worked great for smallies when they were on the small bait pattern, maybe it would work for schoolies too. Also something called the sweetwater chub. once again not sure if they are still made...Both were great nose rigged with a split shot hook.

We were using some similar things from tsunami on some ultra light rods with 6lb test. It was real boring. I just didn't feel like rock hopping on my own so I left to go meet my buddies.

when targeting schoolies,i often use a small rattle trap, rapala,in a herring/shad pattern.the smaller the better.
