i got one to get this going lol....
i was fishing on a early spring morning in l.b.i. had a new fishing lure i had made and took it for a test swim. well i was doing good with it had a few small bass than i got a nice 32" bass ok great i think to my self this plug rocks lol. let the fish go and make my next cast working the plug working the plug by now a seagull is eyeing it up. bird swoops down and grabs the plug ok he will drop it as soon as he see's its fake. well he did not drop it i hooked him in the beek. im flying this bird for a good 10 min like a kite. no way am i going to let this bird fly off with my awesome plug so i work him in to land, ok now what do i do this bird is huge you know the darker brown one the "head seagull lol". i take my light jacket off and toss it over the bird to calm it down thats working i think so i grab the bird by the neck gently and if fucking flips out. its got a wing span of a good 5' and he is kicking my ass with it. now im holding on to its beek with one hand and working the plug out wit the other "smack in the back of my head with a wing over and over and over" well i got the plug free got what was left of my light jacket off him and it flew off. im looking around to see if any one was looking and no one but some fat lady doing yoga on the beach phewwww. back to fishing cast it out and son of a bitch same bird grabs the dam plug and we now have round two.... i cut the line and grabed all my crap and went home he wins he gets the plug. |

...there i was, along the eastern half of the cape cod canal...the mainland side. the tide shift was nearing as the flow started to go slack. bait was sizzling along the surface along the rocks edge nearing 100 yards long. every few seconds there was a splash in the mix from a feeding bass. every cast yielded a fish between 18"-24" for a good 45 minutes. tired of small fish i decided to take the swimshad of the business end and strap on a 4oz jighead loaded with a 9" black sluggo...at this point the tide had shifted and was picking up speed with evbery second. the bait seemed to break into smaller pods and started to move with the turn. i had a hunch the rip that formed about 40 yards out in front of me would be a good place to bounce my jig. the first cast landed right where i wanted it to land...out beyond the ball of bait and away from the schoolies. the first sweep yieled nothing but a small ball of sea weed...cast number two proved to be very different. as soon as mY jig hit the inside of the rip i felt a violent thud...almost like when you bump a rock and almost snag...but this one was a bit different. i then lifted my rod tip and felt something heavy right away..so i put the screws to her to set my hook before she dropped the jig. my drag started so sing and my rod tip keeled over....FISH ON!!!! the first run showed me that this fish had some sheer power and no intentions on comming to shore any time soon. the moment my drag stopped i began to pump the fish in....YEAH...RIGHT!!!! i think i gained five feet and she then crashed the surface way out in the current...my drag peeling again at such a slow speed as if the fish was laughing at me. i have caught fish up to 25lbs before....some in the canal current...this was definetley my shot at a much larger bass. it seemed every time i could pump her in she got even more pissed and took twice what i gained. unable to mopve along the shoreline i decided to give the drag a few more clicks to try and turn her head...i know, i know...set it and forget it...but i was running out of line with a monster bass using the current to her advantage...and she was kicking my ass. before i knew it i was down to my backing. i cant recall how much time went by..but it seemed to go in slow motion. my baitrunner was spooled with 20lb fireline and was pretty full as it was nearing the end of my season. i figure i may have lost 50 yards throughout the season from snags and re-ties....maybe 75 total. that still leaves about 200 yards of fireline and at least 20-30 yards of backing. once i saw the mono backing i started to panic and i clicked the drag a few more times to no avail. once my backing was at the arbor knot the head thrashing took almost no time to snap the knot with the sound of a gunshot. on the rocks i stood with my heart beating outside my chest and adrenaline rushing through my body...it seemed like an hour went by before i was able to figure out i needed to go back to the truck and respool...time stood still. the most important lesson i learned that night was to match tackle to the fishing environment....65# suffix performance braid with a 40# ande shockleader is now loaded on my canal gear....i am ready for a re-match this up and comming fall...."I WONT GET SPOOLED AGAIN"
