Arrow April Vacation Volunteers needed for Brook Clean-up

April Vacation Volunteers needed for Brook Clean-up
SEABROOK - The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services and the Seabrook Conservation Commission invite families, individuals, local businesses and organizations to help clean-up the areas around Cain's Brook on April 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers will be meeting at the Seabrook Recreation Center on Rte 1. Free lunch and beverages are offered as a thank you for participating.
Dubbed "Earth Day, Plus Seven," this event is held one week after the official Earth Day and is part of the restoration of the Cain's Brook that runs from the west side of Seabrook to the salt marsh and ocean.
Cain's Brook is on Route 1, across the street from Home Depot. Local businesses are also getting involved in the clean up and providing the refreshments. Because it abuts Route 1, Cain's Brook, area parking lots and woods, and the culvert under the road get filled with road debris.
Volunteers will not only clean up litter, they will also learn about the brook and assist in the planning of future litter prevention programs. Event coordinators will provide garbage bags, rubber gloves, and forms to record data on the trash that the volunteers find. They collect and remove trash and then record information on the trash they collect, including the total number of each type of item collected.
The Cain's Brook Watershed project is spearheaded by the Seabrook Conservation Commission and partially funded through a grant from DES. Earth Day, Plus Seven is a collaborative effort made possible by the Town of Seabrook, NH Department of Transportation, Seabrook Shaw's, Market Basket, Walmart, and Home Depot, Atomic Fireworks, Richdale's Convenience Store, Coke-a-Cola, Poland Springs, Yankee Fishermen's Coop, SAMS, Waterfront Engineers, and Blue Ocean Society. Additional volunteers are from City Year, Local Girl and Boy Scout troops, and Students from Winnacunnet High School.
To get involved in Earth Day, Plus Seven, call the Seabrook Recreation Department at 474-5746.
