DVD Encoding Question

OK Merrill, got a question for ya! Going to get a PVP/MP3 player and I need some advice on DVD encoding for my movies and format for my DVR recordings. I would also like to know what software I should get for encoding? (I'm talking best quality video)

So Software?
Format? (DIVX, XVID,WMF,VCD etc etc)

Need a crash course so I can start my movies before I head out to Dallas in a few weeks.

Thanks

I work with DivX alot myself. I have plenty of software if you're looking to make your own DVD's. But if there is something in particular you are looking for just let me know. I usually just use all of the Intervideo shit.

Yeah, I'm just looking for an encoder that will retain picture quality. I'll take a look at the Intervideo offerings. Thanks
