Tuna-ing
Headed out about 0700 for Tuna, best weather in some time. River temp barley 60F, outside about 62F. Headed strait out about 14 miles. Found Tuna boats all over. Stopped a mile short of them and trolled in. Nothing on the finder nothing on the lines. Decided to do some jigging since I don't get out that far that often. Nothing!
Out of the corner of my eye I notice a funny patch of water....soon the birds notice it too. Then little fishies are jumping out of the water, not sand eels, but small herring looking things no more than 4". I rig up and go by, nothing! I figure the lines are out again I'll go south. After 10 min, a Tuna (Lone) breaks off to the side, I move over, nothing! I kep trolling for about 45 min, notice another school, turn the boat and get close....they are still in place, I drive right through the middle (Not my intent, but they moved to fast) Nothing! I make my way back to where I was earlier. It is 12:45 by now. Still Tuna Boats, but all anchored. I decide to jig again. Line barely hits bottom, fish on, Big hake. Line down again 15 seconds later another big hake. Down again Hake again. Down again couple of minutes go by and wham! Good fish.....get it to the surface, Cod jigged in back. Down again, a few more minutes, another cod and again jigged in the back. By now I'm getting close to a Tuna boat so I move back to the beginning. Another hake then a haddock, then the wind picks up so I decide to anchor. About this time the Tuna boat people start hollering and such. They have a good Tuna on. They float off their ball and start the fight. I get a redfish, a cunner, and a pollock, and the bottom . I finally have to cut 180' of line. Tuna boat still making noise. I re-rig with a set of cod hooks and get some more of the same, then hang that down too. Finally get that back up. The Tuna boat finally either looses the fish or it is too small, I suspect the latter by the radio chatter. The wind starts in ernest and I have to get home anyway so I Pull anchor to go home and on the end of my anchor line is my cod jig and 180' of 80# mono. So I actually got my gear back. I head in looking for birds or marks but find none. Clean up boat and actually get home on time for my wife. All in all a great day, but no Tuna. In the end I put about 15# of fish in the freezer. Picts to follow when I get them up. High surface temp of the day 63.2F Oddfish Last edited by oddfish : 09-03-2009 at 02:38 AM. |

Tuna
I went out Tues. The seas were supposed to be 1-3. turned out to be LARGE 3's. Saw no tuna on the screen. Jiged for a while... nothing. Lots of those little herring. Terns were having a field day. Went about 1/2 way to Old Scantom, thought for sure we would a least see some fish but no dice. Two of the head boats were anchored by the IOS. All they caught were turds! Went back to 2KR to look for mac's.. nothing! No pogies either. Maybe going out FRi, weather permitting. Good luck today, odd!
