My fishing "adventure"
Heres how my fishing "adventure" went last night. Headed out last night to catch the incoming. I fished for a few hours and had a bunch of bites but no fish landed. I moved out to the ocean front to try a little different approach. As im sitting in my chair i hear a noise right next to me. A fox, 2 feet to the right of me, was ripping apart my bag trying to get at the pogy i had thawing out. It scared the crap out me and instinctively i turned and ran maybe 50 ft. Its pretty dark but i see the little sucker run away with my bag and fish.
. So after being pretty freaked out at this point and hoping to not get rabies, i went back toward where i was fishing, there was a little more light and atleast one other person fishing so atleast i felt a little safer. I tossed out some clams i had and kept fishing, all the while peeking over my shoulder looking for that stupid fox. i got a fish, yay!!!!! i reel in the smallest striper ever landed on rod and reel. Im going to round UP and say the fish was 14". Sonofa!!! So its now past midnight and very annoyed i packed up my stuff and was heading home. On the way i passed by this little bend in the river where i can see lots of swirls and fishing flying around everywhere. Awesome i thought. I proceeded to throw everything i had without so much as a bump. As i just finished reeling in the lure i was throwing, a fish, not sure what kind maybe 7-8", beaches itself right in front of me! hehe. I proceed to throw a hook in him and toss him out there. The current was pretty fast so i had to throw him back out a couple times but maybe the 6th cast it was on! my line went out SCREAMING! Id gain some line on him and it would run out again, almost taking all my line. This happened a bunch of times and the battle lasted my 20+ minutes. Seeing how it was pulling the the swirls i saw i knew i had a beast. It seemed to tire out and it started to come toward the beach. 15 ft away, 10 ft, 5 ft "OMG i have the world record striper!!!" I thought. The adrenaline was pumping. At about 5 feet away from my feet it decideds to stick its head out of the water and look at me! Thats right, i hooked onto a #hfhi$(*&% seal!!!!!! After i realised what it was i cut my line and stood their just stupified!! I went through a whole bunch of emotions, laughter, annoyance, anger.... so, i packed up my stuff and headed out. I was POed the whole car ride home b/c all i wanted was one keeper bass. Darn. So that concludes my last fishing trip of the year. After how this trip went, im sure the only left for me to do now was to somehow hook myself, so i figured it'd just be safer for me to call it quits for this season. lmao. Maybe i should just stick to freshwater. |

Not to be a
but packing it up now would be a big mistake. Try fishing at night, on the high out going, out front. This is the best time of year. We are having an off year as well so don't get discouraged, although i have caught some of the biggest bass and set new personal bests for myself and my friends the fishing has been slow, unpredictable, and at times frustrating. Ya can't catch em if you don't go out and put your time in. My week ends are zero sleep, angry gf, and zombie mondays. But I catch fish. |

All in one night. Keeper bass or not your post was great. Please go back and try again. I want to read more.
You musta had a pogie. I am always seeing seals around the pogies schools. I watched a seal breach in a pod of pogies this year. Looked like "Shark Week" |

If you were fishing the Mack I am 100% certain that what you saw was a coyote. There is a coyote thats pretty brave stealing bait from the jetty down to the fishing docks.
Don't pack it in yet - try out front, Rye Beach, Refuge Lots 3 - 6, worms or clams. Two hours before - two hours after high tide. Good Luck! |

i was pretty aggravated but MAYBE ill head out one or two more times. A lot of you guys are lucky, i live like 1.5 hrs away from the ocean so i cant just run out the door and go fishing on a whim.
I know for a fact there are coyotes on PI but im 100% this guy was a fox. Ive seen him a few other times. |

Thanks for the great laugh. Your story is a good reminder of why we head out to enjoy the outdoors. You never know what might happen and for me that's part of the fun.
At least the seal only ate your bait. When I fished Nantucket last year, the seals were eating the blues and stripers as we were reeling them in. ![]() |
