Why all the hate for "dogfish?"

I was just curious why it seems everyone hates these guys. I hooked a bunch not too long ago and i thought they were pretty fun to fight, atleast for a little while then it seemed like theyd just give up and be dead weight. Are they so unpopular b/c they are not good eating or am i missing something? My g/f thought it was a blast to be out catching sharks.

My Reason

My reason for not liking them is that they chase out everyother fish, and they eat the young of anything they can get their mouth around. The problem is that their #'s have been allowed to proliferate while other species have gone into decline. We have made them sort of an invasive species. I don't have anything personal aginst them, and I let them go, but I like cod and haddock much better that dog. Get the Brits over here and let them eat them to extinction (I Say). Doggies on the east side of the Atlantic used to be called fish and chips.

I've always had fun catching them, I don't eat fish, so I don't care what I catch!

Let's see..... What do they trash....

$5 tuna hooks, unless you decapitate them

Silly expensive flourocarcon leader

Hundreds on pounds of fresh herring that has tripled in price....

Nothing but Dogs on every drop when Tuna are the target....

Na, these things are a blast..... NOT!!!!!

Can't think of a simpler target if you want to haul them in by the hundreds but if you want to catch something else they are nothing more than a total pain in the A$$.

I know one reason is they have been the bane of the ground fish charters for both the captain and the customers. Nothing like paying $60 for day of codfishing and catching more dogs than cod and haddock. They always show up 1/2 hr after everybody drops their bait, and they do the swimming in circles thing when you are reeling em in, half the time tangling your line with the guy next to you. I still dont hate them, they are just a big pain in the ass sometimes. I would eat one but that will be when i visit my buddy who lives in
England!

Ok that one made me laughth_icon_loll. gif, pretty much summed up my feelings, but damned if they arn't somewhat pretty when there are 300 circleing the boat waiting for the next morsel to be dropped (saurcazm intended). It's a real thrill when you get 3-5 on a mackeral/cod jig set-up. Pretty much take that set up off and drop a new one then deal with the aftermath of twisted chark and line.

Hmm, yeah, the loss of tackle, the loss of expensive bait, they chase off pods of bait and gamefish. Pain in the arse. Some people wonder why we often hate on bluefish so much too....but they dont remember that eels are expensive if you're not trapping your own. And losing eels to blues at 1.75 a pop is a real twat.
