Question finding pogies?

Looking to load up on bait fish in the piscatisqua, and wondering if anyone had found any good spots for pogies, or had any recommendations. I'm still figuring out this whole salt water thing. Thanks!

If they are around, they shouldnt be hard to find in the bays or inlets during the early AM hours. I've never really had to go very far upriver to find em.

I talked to a friend that knows the bay I ask him about blues and strippers. he said that there were pods of snapper blues 9-10" long but not taking bait (sounds like Poggies to me)
So give the area between little bay and great bay a look.

I don't know where you are heading out of but I forgot this on the earlier post, as was coming back from Durham and looking all the way for fish. going over the sullivan bridge I caught a glimps of some gulls working the cove just downstream of Great Bay Marina.

Good Fishing, Oddfish.

I was fishing the bay both sun and mon am. I saw one of those pods of pogies coming my way, got the snagging hook ready, and proceded to snag one of those snapper blues. I watched as this repeted quite a few times, and I was able to see them go by. Each time I saw it, it was the blues, mostly about 6" size.

From my limited experience, it seems to me that normaly pogies will continue swimming along in the surface column where the plankton bloom is the strongest. If there are no predators such as big blues, stripers or seals around they will continue doing this for quite a while. Of course unless a unwary boater comes flying in and puts them down.

The difference in the snapper blue pods I was seeing is that there would be a flurry of activity remenicent of a frenzy out front, but it would start and end abruptly. More of a slashing motion then the rolling flipping activity of the poggies...

I'm not saying that there are not any pogies in the Bay, because there surely are, but many of the pods I was seeing where I was fishing were blues.

Please be respectful of the Lab if you fish that way I wouldn't want to lose access. I had to cringe when the name of this spot got thrown around. Although it is well known it's not very well known.

Thanks harry ..I cringed too...I agree Spot burning is a dangerous thing, and although no harm was meant when it was mentioned, in my opinion it was too specific...maybe in the future, Someone could just mention pogies in the bay rather then the precise spot...

Btw The lab itself is closed to fishing..

Also , to boaters who can fish the entire bay, keep in mind that shore fisherman have many fewer spots to chose from, so spot burning is a much more sensitive issue...The entire great bay has very few spots that can be reached from the shore especialy at mid tide or below, because of the long sloaping muddy shoreline and the amount of private property along its shores.
