Agreed. No big deal. It doesn't really bother me informing active members of this board but it's not fair that there are lurkers out there that don't participate and reap the benefits.

Thank you oddfish...That was exactly what I meant.
It still helps people , but it leaves them to do a little homework, and leaves out the specifics.. Thank you for understanding, and like I said in my post,I realize that no harm was meant, and I respectfully tried to point this out.. Last edited by Riverjim : 09-04-2008 at 11:41 AM. |

Personally I disdain boats. I enjoy the challanges of surfcasting. The lab is owned by UNH and State Wild Life. Shutting down this spot would really limit the access. Not everyone has the means for a boat. Surfcasting spots have always been a gaurded secret. I could say I fished Rye Harbor but do you know where I was on the jetty or which rock on the shore I was on. I have spent a lot of time doing high and low tide recon at many of my spots. I have snorkel to find the holes or put in countless hours working a spot. I could personally give a shit if you get ticked for me calling out spot burning. I am more than willing to share with you my techniques, time of day or tide. But no way in hell am I gonna tell you were the 40# and 25# came from last week end. Some people will come out to your spot and leave coiled line, beer cans, or whatever. This behaivor shuts down access. There have been several beaches shut down in Maine this year for these reasons and many guys are upset. I hate picking up other peoples trash but I do it. So I would hate to have any members such as yourself who participate and leave enjoyable posts move on but if thats what you feel the need to do than do so. Some things can be kept to a PM. I have personally taken memebers from this board out and shown them some of my haunts. I would much rather fish a spot with someone than just tell them where to go. I put my time in, it;s the only way to learn, others should do the same.

Wow, thanks for all the responses to my first post, even though it got a bit controversial
. As far as naming specific places goes, you've got to have at least a little knowledge already for a location like that to mean much. I tried looking up the place in question and found nothing useful on google. Not that anything else helped me either (more due to my skills than the info I got here). Went out yesterday at dawn and only saw one pod, near the mouth of the lamprey, but a seal broke it up before I got there. Seals seemed to be just about everywhere. Maybe next time, thanks! |

MM forum Rule # 2 covers "Spot Burning", it can be found in the Rules & Regulations announcement thread located here.....
The Marsh Marauders™ - NH area fishing, hunting, and sportsman forums - Announcements in Forum : What's New "Spot Burning" is frowned upon on the internet for mostly obvious reasons. If you haven't ever lost access to one of your favorite spots, you have no idea then. Harry is correct in mentioning the "Lurkers" and "Trolls" who hang out on fishing and hunting sites and never register and participate. Lurkers just suck up all the info that registered participating members offer and never return the favor. If you want to offer up exact locations to *******s, then so be it. But most sites and forums won't allow it. It's kind of like an "unwritten rule" on most sites, NO SPOT BURNING. You must never forget that there are TONS of visitors to this and others, visitors who just want to find the easy way to results. "General area" is completely acceptable. To list exact locations, directions, addresses, GPS coordinates etc. is just plain stupid. And let's not forget about the folks who have been fishing for decades, who never had the internet, and couldnt suck info off the 'net in order to find and catch fish. The Lurkers & Trolls use US. Some people don't want to do the footwork, they only want the easy route to catch trophy fish and score trophy game, and they don't want to offer anything relevant in return. Why should people like that be rewarded? I personally don't think it is fair to those who have been out there before us who never had this luxury of internet sportsman sites and forums. This Spot Burning issue has been discussed time and time again. If you want to share your exact locations with folks, please do so through PM. I have personally had spots CLOSED over the years, because Lurkers and Trolls got exact locations off forums that aren't even owned and operated by people LOCAL to this area, and the Trolls & Lurkers went and trashed the places and abused it. So why is it fair that some Troll can get an exact location off a site based in say, New Jersey, then myself and other locals lose access because some asswipe Lurkers and Trolls got the "411" from a site like that? What's fair about that? So in ending, yes, avoiding Spot Burning and frowning upon it really makes things a whole lot easier for everyone. Especially those operate and Administrate web sites and forums. NO SPOT BURNING! And yes, a little controversy is great for participation and discussion! ![]() |

This will be my last comment on this. I am not here to start trouble for any member or the site management. I think a final say on it is called for after some of the comments made since my other reply.
I don't consider anything I have posted in this thread( or since I have been here )nor anything here from anyone else as "spot burning"? Someone asked about Pogies and we told them where they might see some. Now keep in mind here people are upset over "spot burning" places for BAIT not trophy fish in secret honey holes. I just don't get it? I seem to recall last week a thread where people were discussing catching Pogies off the docks at Hampton Harbor. Is this thread not the exact same situation? I didn't see anyone crying "spot burn" on that thread and it was even more specific than anything posted here. General area well known to most anyone who has ever fished or hunted the Bay. Someone else said some of the pods thought to be Pogies turned out to be Blue's. Again, I see no "spot burn". Perhaps our definition of that is different. ![]() If you guys are that worried about lurkers and trolls sucking info from here however then maybe you should make the forums for members only. No registration no viewing the forum. IMO a few folks are overreacting in this thread anyway. This is fishing not life or death and no super secret spot was given away.I am not an internet forum newbie by any stretch either. I am a webmaster/web designer and a long time veteran of truck forums and the various waterfowl forums. I even Mod on some of them. I know what general areas are vs exact spots and saying the name of the boat launch or that particular science lab is no big deal. You can ask any game warden, license agent, sporting goods store, other fishermen, etc.. and be told to go there. Walk into a Suds-n-Soda and ask and they will tell you the same info I did. That particular 1/4 mile stretch of shoreline is NOT a secret. Actually, the fishing there is kind of poor all truth be told. I guess maybe I should move on and search for another forum if it is THAT big a deal and what I posted violated the "spot burn" rule. If I do stay rest assured I will NEVER EVER again post anything other than "I fished in the water the other day somewhere in a state". ![]() Oh, and btw, I was a lurker here for 2 months +/- before I decided to join and contribute. Does that make me an "asswipe" as well? I have to say( in way of explanation for bringing it up - NOT to start anything with the Admin who posted it )that comment really sat wrong with me as a newer member that did lurk before deciding to invest my time in the site and join. Not all lurkers are "asswipes" and comments like that will turn a lot of folks off and away from your site. Just something to consider. No need for swearing by members or admins.
