Here is another thought on that. Casting a net into the kind of current that would be present at the mouth of HH like that would be a nightmare. It really rips through there unless you get way off to the side.

I stock 7/0 snags in the shop here. You don't need to mess with the netting permit from F&G, either.
Can you ever catch mackerel from the shore? I fish HH from time to time (the side most people fish and would love to live mack fish that, but I have no idea how to catch mackerel to then catch Striped Bass. Is this something that you usually need a boat for?

Yes you can. My experience is that I have had much better luck within the first hour of light, then it usualy shuts down unless your within casting distance of deaper water. Sometimes it picks up again just prior to sunset. When the late season macs have arrived. you can catch them more often durring the midday hours. The slack midday time period also does not seem to happen as much on very overcast days.

Thanks

Actually we catch most of the bait fish just outside the harbor around the disharge area, been doing it for years. The HH drift has produced plenty of nice stripers for us over the years and it is allways guaranteed action. I feel bad for the guys with the anchors, they must get mad seeing Slider and I drift through with double hook ups all the time. I have had a few anchored boats yell over and ask "Hey are your arms tired yet"! Hmmmmm NOPE!!

Thanks for the snag hook idea guys, Myself and Slider will surely add some of those to our tackle boxes! Appreciate the assistance and we will swing by Pete and pick a couple of those up for sure.

A lot of macks could be caught from shore earlier this year. Following the birds around. Seems to have slowed down over the past couple of weeks. Your best bet would be in the piscat.

Nice fish and great pics! Looks like that rod with the red reel is one wake away from taking a swim

What size sabiki hooks are you guys using for Pogies? I've tried size 8 and size 12 hooks a few times and haven't had any luck. I do ok with the snag hooks, but sometimes its a lot of effort for a few baits if they aren't balled up.
