I was fishing the bay both sun and mon am. I saw one of those pods of pogies coming my way, got the snagging hook ready, and proceded to snag one of those snapper blues. I watched as this repeted quite a few times, and I was able to see them go by. Each time I saw it, it was the blues, mostly about 6" size.
From my limited experience, it seems to me that normaly pogies will continue swimming along in the surface column where the plankton bloom is the strongest. If there are no predators such as big blues, stripers or seals around they will continue doing this for quite a while. Of course unless a unwary boater comes flying in and puts them down.
The difference in the snapper blue pods I was seeing is that there would be a flurry of activity remenicent of a frenzy out front, but it would start and end abruptly. More of a slashing motion then the rolling flipping activity of the poggies...
I'm not saying that there are not any pogies in the Bay, because there surely are, but many of the pods I was seeing where I was fishing were blues.
